EFT

As a therapeutic technique there is little else to equal its simplicity and effectiveness. Many experienced therapists now report typical success rates of 80-95% for many conditions. The immediate history of EFT is short; its future looks to be much longer.

EFT originated from TFT (Thought Field Therapy), which was discovered by acupuncturist and psychologist Dr Roger Callahan. Overtime, Dr Callahan developed the basic concept and structure and, along with many other therapists working in this field, began to realise the broader possibilities for EFT.  More recently, it has also been adopted by many medical professionals.

How it works: In the normal course of a day, we experience many emotions.  Some feel good and others don't. Either way these feelings aren't permanent. For example, if you drive a car you will be aware that some drivers frequently get angry at other road users. Thankfully, most of them don't hold onto that anger for very long and it is soon forgotten.

However, when an experience is particularly intense, especially if we are very young and, more crucially, if it is repeated, then it seems to cause a more permanent change within us. Following on from this, just thinking about our bad experience can cause intense emotion - even years after the event.

The bad experience that we suffered in the past caused a disruption in the body's energy system, a bit like a short circuit in a piece of electrical equipment. It is this disruption that causes us to have the unwanted emotional or physical response.

During EFT we tap on some of the body's main acupuncture points, whilst keeping our issue in mind. The technique of tapping has the effect of clearing the disruption in our energy system. Then, when we think about that same issue, it no longer gives us the undesired emotional response because the disruption is gone.  It really is that simple and it really works too…

It is suggested that the tapping induces a mini-REM state in the brain which re-organises how we store and process information.  This is medically proven with the use of EEG machines (which measures brainwaves.)  These tests show that brainwave patterns do respond to the tapping.

Like so many practitioners, I am genuinely intrigued as to how EFT works and until science gives us a definite answer I am quite happy to wait and continue to share EFT with others.
